Qufu: The Hometown of Confucius

Located in southwestern Shandong Province, Qufu is renowned worldwide as the birthplace of Confucius (551–479 BCE), the great Chinese philosopher and educator whose ideas have deeply influenced East Asian civilization. As a historic center of Confucianism, Qufu is home to three famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites collectively known as "San Kong" — the Temple of Confucius (Kong Miao), the Kong Family Mansion (Kong Fu), and the Cemetery of Confucius (Kong Lin). The Temple, first built in 478 BCE, is the second-largest ancient architectural complex in China after the Forbidden City. The Kong Family Mansion served as the residence of Confucius’ descendants, who held noble titles for centuries. The Cemetery, where Confucius and over 100,000 of his descendants are buried, is one of the oldest and best-preserved cemeteries in the world. Today, Qufu remains a living museum of Confucian culture, attracting scholars, pilgrims, and tourists who come to pay homage to the sage and explore China’s rich philosophical heritage.
